The Power of Networking: Creating Authentic Connections

Networking can be intimidating, especially for introverts like me, but you have to remember the power of networking. I don’t always focus on business; I try to form more meaningful and lasting relationships. If you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone just a bit, the rewards are worth it.

What Is Networking?

According to the online dictionary, networking is the exchange of information and ideas among individuals with shared interests or professions. To me, it isn’t always about expanding my contact list; it’s about creating genuine connections that matter. In this post we are going to talk about the power of networking.

Setting Clear Goals:

Take some time to decide who your ideal client is. What do they do for a living, and how can you assist them in their business? Know what skills you are strong in and have that elevator pitch ready. It may sound silly, but it really helps with networking, whether in person or online. People are busy, and they may only have a few minutes of attention, so be prepared.

Online Platforms:

There are many online platforms these days, so you might need to put in some extra effort to determine which ones will work best for you. Join or follow individuals who could benefit from your niche services. Interact with them regularly to get your name out there. Engage with them, participate in their groups or forums, and share your knowledge, even if they don’t hire you in the end. The next time they’re looking for assistance or someone they know, you could be that go-to person. Additionally, connect with other virtual assistants and groups.

I’m part of a few, and the knowledge and support are invaluable. You may feel this is counterintuitive and that they are part of the competition. However, in my experience, if they know you and what you do, they will be more than willing to recommend you for opportunities or seek you out when they need help. The key to online networking is identifying where you receive the most benefit and what feels comfortable to you. I prefer Facebook (Join the Virtual Assistant Advantage FB group) , Instagram, and YouTube. I’m exploring LinkedIn. I started that because Alyssa had a LinkedIn challenge to help you get started and connect with the right people to build your business.

Join Small Groups and Workshops or Attend Conferences:

You don’t always have to do things related to virtual assistant work. I was contacted by someone from my old book club! I was thrilled but all I did was share some of the things I had been doing. This also applies to workshops and conferences. You might be a virtual assistant specializing in marketing, coaching, or social media management. What types of conferences could you attend? A writers’ conference, maybe a wellness conference or workshop. This may be one of those areas where you need to break out of your comfort zone, but these are places to meet people and develop relationships, not just business-focused ones.

Volunteer

This is an excellent area to showcase abilities as well as develop friendships, all while working towards a common cause. This can also help build confidence. Volunteer to help with a website or create images for a fundraiser. You build your confidence, receive good feedback, and share your skills. Many years ago, I volunteered as an operations manager for a local cat shelter. I created brochures, welcome packages, and cat advice pages to make adoption easy and stress-free. You never know where that next opportunity may come from.

Conclusion:

Begin by knowing who your ideal client would be. Determine your strengths and weaknesses and what you can offer that client. Create and practice that elevator pitch; you never know when it will come in handy. Look for areas to get your name and skills out there, either online or in person, and start by developing good connections. Lastly, join groups, volunteer, let people get to know you and what you are capable of. Networking is about connecting authentically and allowing people to see your potential. Who knows, that next opportunity might be just around the corner.
