I’ve been a virtual assistant for for almost 17 years now, and I would say that yes, being a virtual assistant is a good career. It is especially good if you’re a mom.
You Can Make the Job Your Own
One reason I say this is because this career is very fun. You have the ability to decide when you’re going to work and who you’re going to work with. You can decide to take the clients that are a good fit for you and to leave the clients behind who are not a good fit for you. Plus, you have the ability to decide when and how much you’re going to work.
There are also other perks to it as well. I believe that one area I am gifted in is the gift of administration. And therefore, I’m able to serve behind the scenes of lots of Christian authors, speakers, and coaches, and I am able to help them do what they do well. It is very rewarding when you see there is an author, speaker, or coach who is very passionate about what they do, and you are able to come alongside them and support them in their role.
You Can Make Good Money
Another rewarding piece is, and I know that I try not to mention this very often, but it is the money that you are able to make. I work part time, yet I’m able to make a full time income. I decide what my hourly rate is going to be, and over the years I have raised my rate.
One of the nice things about this business is that there are very low costs to starting a virtual assistant business. When I started my business almost 17 years ago, I did go to the bank and take out a small business loan. The loan was for 3 thousand dollars, and I was able to pay that loan back, but I don’t recommend taking out a loan to start a VA business.
Here’s why: there is very little overhead in a virtual assistant business. The main pieces that you need are a website, a computer, and high speed internet. However, when I started my business, I did not even have high speed internet, so you can do this without it.
You Can Market Your Skills
Aside from that, you just need some skills to offer to your clients. Everybody has skills, so you just have to figure out which of your skills are marketable to other people. You should look at the things that you are good at, your areas of expertise, your gifts, and then turn those into skills that you can market in your business.
Now whether or not a virtual assistant business is a good career depends on the person. I have a quiz available here on my website, so you can decide for yourself. I also have a list of 25 things that you can do as a virtual assistant. Maybe you can find something on that list that you already have the skillset for, and you can decide if becoming a virtual assistant might be right for you.
I hope this was helpful. Thanks for reading!
